Trevecca students bring home top journalism honors
Five Trevecca students won a combined seven awards from the Tennessee Associated Press on Saturday. Nominated in seven categories, the student reporters won an award in each one.
Senior Mannon Lane won first place in the Specialized/Topic Reporting category for a series of stories on tuition equality that appeared in the Trevechoes, the University’s student newspaper.
Jessy Anne Walters, also a senior, won first place for Best Feature Story and second place in Investigative/In-Depth Reporting.
Trevechoes editor Bailey Basham, a junior, placed second in the Best Newspaper Reporter category and received an honorable mention in Investigative/In-depth Reporting.
Olivia Kelley, editor of the Trevechoes Online, took home second place in the Online Investigative/In-depth Reporting category.
Hannah Pollok, a junior, won third place for Best Feature Story.
“The awards indicate that the combination of academic training and a vibrant student newspaper are in fact training our students to enter the journalism industry and be competitive with graduates of any other program in the state,” said Jo Ellen Werking-Weedman, Trevecca journalism instructor.
The Tennessee Associated Press Broadcasters and Media Editors College Contest is an annual competition for college media students throughout the state. A total of 10 public and private universities submitted more than 225 entries in this year’s competition.
