Trevecca chaplain to transition into new role

Trevecca Nazarene University’s chaplain, Shawna Songer Gaines, will soon move into a new role within the Trevecca community. Gaines has been selected as the senior pastor of Trevecca Community Church, located adjacent to campus.

“I want to congratulate Shawna Songer Gaines on her selection as the senior pastor of Trevecca Community Church,” said Dr. Dan Boone, president of Trevecca. “Our campus church plays an important role in the formation of students, the care of our employees and the modeling of healthy church leadership. Pastor Gaines will provide each of these with excellence.

“She is one of the best preachers in the Church of the Nazarene today—seasoned in pastoral leadership, experienced in the formation of persons of faith and committed to serve the diverse generations and groups that comprise the church,” Boone continued.

Gaines will remain in her role as university chaplain through the University’s Thanksgiving break, transitioning to her work with Trevecca Community Church after that date.

At Trevecca, Gaines has played an instrumental role in shaping the devotional life of the community, planning chapels, organizing mission trips and service projects and calling the community to prayer and faithfulness. She joined the faculty in 2016, taking on the role of university chaplain after Dr. Tim Green stepped down to devote more time to preparing students for ministry through Trevecca’s Millard Reed School of Theology and Christian Ministry.

Green, who served as university chaplain for 25 years, will assume the role of interim chaplain at Trevecca following Gaines’ departure. Throughout the Spring 2019 semester, Green and other faculty members of the School of Theology and Christian Ministry—including Prof. Mary Schmitt, Dr. Mike Jackson, Dr. Kathy Mowry and Dr. Tim Gaines—will jointly lead the University’s chapels.
