WBK_HackettCallie_NEWS_418Growing up, I am sure we have all been told, “There is no ‘I’ in team.” It is proven to be even more accurate as the years go by. There is more to being on a team than worrying about yourself. Say you just finished your last sprint and are utterly exhausted, but you see your teammate struggling; what do you do? Do you focus on how hard it was and how tired you feel? Or do you step up, get out of your comfort zone, cheer for your teammate, and give them a high-five when they finish?

There are many choices and sacrifices we must make when we are part of a team. It is not only about wearing the same jersey as those around us and calling them our teammates. These people we are surrounded by on a daily basis should become our family. They are people we must love, care for, and cherish. It means teammates must hold each other accountable on the court, in the classroom, and in life. We let each other know when we are not meeting expectations, but we also lift each other up every chance we get.

Most importantly, being a good teammate calls for enthusiasm and effort. The best teammates are those who compete at all times, which in turn makes everyone else on the team want to work that much harder. Whether you are having a great day or if nothing seems to be going right at all, you can always bring energy to the rest of your team. Even though it may be hard at times, it is important to bring positivity into practice and games, because it will make a huge difference in the atmosphere.

Allowing yourself to be a part of a team gives you lifelong memories and some of your best friends. You can share a special bond with those around you as you go through heartbreaking games, tough practices, team bonding days, locker room talks, and much more together. Through all of these ups and downs, we must always remember to put our teammates before ourselves. Team success is more important than any individual success could ever be.

So, what kind of teammate will you be? One that focuses on themselves or one that gives their teammate a high-five? It is all up to you. Choose to be the best teammate you can be!
