The recruiting process is one of the most fun, but stressful times in an athlete’s life. There are so many questions an athlete must not only ask themselves but must also ask numerous colleges. Even when you think you can’t ask anything else, you’ll most likely go home wondering why you didn’t ask something. The most significant question, however, is one that takes the most time to process: What is the best fit for me? It is essential to realize the biggest offer regarding scholarship you have might not be the right fit in the long run. You must consider many variables.
My advice for the recruiting process is to think about what will make you the happiest. There are too many athletes transferring because they didn’t pick the best overall fit for them. Does being happy for you mean being close to home, getting to play a lot, getting to travel, getting a full-ride, or playing at a big-name school? These might make you happy, but in reality, most schools will not fit all of your “wants.” List out the pros and cons and decide what is best for YOU! Your loved ones will be there for advice and support, but it is important to remember you are the one who is making this big decision. You are the one who is committing to a place for a few years of your life.
I originally signed and then played NCAA Division1 basketball. After two years I transferred. I thought I made the right decision, but now I’m attending school in the Heart of Nashville at Trevecca. I went through the recruiting process twice. Take it from me; it is best to look at every option you have. Do not look back in life and wonder what could have been. Take a leap of faith and see where it takes you. When I decided to transfer after two years, I had to rethink and process all of these things over again. Now here at Trevecca, I genuinely believe I am where I am supposed to be.
Brittin’s Top Ten Recruiting Tips:
- Find the best fit for YOU!
- Ask questions - don’t be afraid to ask too many.
- List the pros and cons of each school.
- Do your research on the school and program.
- When visiting schools, be you and only you.
- Promote yourself - not all schools will reach out to you, so send video or fill out the program’s questionnaire.
- Play at a level you believe you can succeed - not all of us should be playing women’s basketball at UConn or Football at Alabama.
- Go somewhere you are happy when your sport isn’t in season.
- Live out your dreams - you only have four years of eligibility.
- Find a place you can call home - be your best academically, athletically, and spiritually!
