University announces TAG trips for 2017-2018
Trevecca Nazarene University students will serve across the country and around the world this year through four mission trips. University Chaplain Shawna Songer Gaines announced this year’s planned Trevecca Around the Globe (TAG) trips in chapel on Oct. 3.
Students and sponsors will travel to Argentina, Haiti and a major city in one of the world’s fastest growing urban centers. In addition, Trevecca will team up with partner school, Eastern Nazarene College, for two trips in the United States.
“We don’t expect these students to change the world in two weeks,” Gaines said. “But two weeks of watching God at work in another culture can forever change the life of a student who will leave a kingdom mark on this world.”
Salta, Argentina
This trip, led by Levi Osborne and Abi Buter and set for May 9-23, 2018, will take students to Salta, Argentina, a city in the mountainous northwestern region of Argentina. The students will support urban church planting efforts by participating in community development initiatives, medical clinics, children’s ministry and music ministry. They will work alongside missionaries throughout the trip.
St. Mark, Haiti
Dr. Andrew Burnham, coordinator of special education and visual impairments grant program, will serve as the sponsor of this trip to Haiti, which will center on education efforts. The group will host a teacher’s conference while also learning about curriculum development and education in developing communities. In addition, the team will serve with local children’s ministries and early education centers. This trip is set for July 17-27, 2018.
Urban Ministry
Students will also travel to one of the world’s fastest growing urban centers in May 2018. Many people from rural areas are moving the large international city, and students will help to welcome residents and help them find community in the burgeoning city. Dr. Kathy Mowry, professor of intercultural studies and Christian education, will lead this trip.
Fusion Trips
Trevecca’s partner school, Eastern Nazarene University has been offering FUSION trips for many years as a way for students to interact with cultures other than their own. This year, Trevecca students will participate in two trips with ENC students, one in Boston, focusing on the church’s response to human trafficking, and another in Houston, centered on hurricane relief. These trips will be offered during Spring Break 2018.
