Dr. Mary Ann Meiners, economics professor, recognized with award at national conference
Dr. Mary Ann Meiners, a professor of economics at Trevecca Nazarene University, was recently named the recipient of the Barnabas Award. The Christian Business Faculty Association (CBFA), a national organization comprised of Christian business faculty members, honored Meiners with the award at their annual conference hosted by Covenant College in Chattanooga, Oct. 4-6.
Meiners, who has been a member of Trevecca’s business faculty for 29 years, said she was humbled by the honor.
“It was an honor to receive this award from an organization that has meant so much to me and has been so influential in shaping in me a biblically informed understanding of economics,” she said.
A graduate of Georgetown University who also holds a doctorate from Vanderbilt University, Meiners currently teaches economics in Trevecca’s Skinner School of Business and Technology. With a special interest in international economic development, poverty issues and economics education, Meiners has also pursued these interests in Jamaica, Kenya, Belize and through her work with the refuge community of Nashville.
Prior to her work at Trevecca, Meiners taught at Middle Tennessee State University.
Dr. Jim Hiatt, dean of Trevecca’s Skinner School of Business and Technology, said it was no surprise that the CBFA chose to honor Meiners with the award.
“Dr. Meiners has faithfully supported the CBFA organization since 1992, including serving two terms on the CBFA board and one term as the CBFA board chair,” Hiatt said. “Because of her servant leadership, dedication to the association and her encouragement of others over the years, she was honored with the Barnabas Award.”
According to the CBFA’s website, the Barnabas Award recognizes individuals who exhibit qualities inspired by the life of Jesus’ disciple, Barnabas, such as encouragement, servant-leadership, dedication and innovation.
“Barnabas, a disciple of Jesus Christ in the first century, exhibited many qualities necessary for keeping Christian organizations strong and vibrant,” the CBFA website reads. “This award recognizes individuals who have served CBFA by being a Barnabas, exhibiting similar qualities, serving and participating joyfully and enthusiastically and contributing to CBFA’s effectiveness and esprit de corps.”
