Amie's Miracle for Medical Missions

| Academics

“Last week, I thought I wasn’t going to be able to come to Trevecca, but God has provided in an awesome way,” Amie* relayed to me when I called her the week before classes started. As coordinator for the first year of the Physician Assistant Program, I phone students the week before orientation to answer any questions, and to ask how to pray for them.

I remembered Amie from months earlier, as I had been a part of her admissions interview team and heard of her calling as a young girl to be a missionary. Her Bible college education had been followed by raising money for the mission field by working as a certified nursing assistant. It was while working as a CNA that God began to clarify Amie’s call to both ministry and medicine. On the mission field in South America, God further clarified her vision to create a medical training program for medical missionaries, who would go back to serve their own people groups in South America, or even serve as medical missionaries in creative access countries.

The only problem? She needed medical training herself.

Amie applied to the Physician Assistant Program at Trevecca with impeccable credentials, but what impressed us most was her God-given vision. She clearly relayed how God called her from an early age, and carefully guided her steps to Trevecca. To know that she was looking to serve people of other nations through medical missions was a perfect fit for Trevecca’s PA Program vision to prepare professionally competent physician assistants who will use their skills to serve their communities in compassionate ministry.

The faculty was delighted to see her name appear on the confirmed acceptance list, and I was a bit dismayed when she told me that a week before coming to the Program, she had considered withdrawing.

“All along, the Lord has told me to trust Him for my finances for PA school. I was not to take loans or ask others for money, but to wait on the Lord," Amie told me.

“For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” – II Corinthians 1:20, NKJV, was the verse that the Lord gave Amie as a promise to cling to that He would provide.

Amie had announced her plans to attend PA school to her friends and family without knowing how God would provide financially.

As time grew closer, she quit her job, but she had no money for school. Then she gave up the lease on her apartment. Still, there was no money for school. She sold her furniture, without finances for school, but great hope that God Himself would provide.

Friends threw her going-away parties. Secretly, Amie had no money to attend Trevecca, and she knew the Lord was challenging her trust in Him.

As she carefully considered withdrawing from the program, homeless, jobless, and broke, she cried out to God for provision.

Then exactly one week before she was to leave for PA school, three individuals came forward, telling Amie that they were impressed by God to give her money for school. The amount? Enough for the first semester’s tuition.

Around that time is when I called Amie, and for the first time, I heard the story about how God miraculously provided for her first semester tuition.

Trevecca’s Physician Assistant Program was founded for students just like Amie: who feel the call of God on their lives to serve in medical missions – domestically or abroad. The majority of current PA students sense God’s call on their lives to medical ministry, and many have very distinct visions of areas of service to the poor. Unfortunately, a lot of students are wary of the debt incurred by PA school, knowing that it will delay their return to the mission field by years, or even decades. With little available for scholarships, PA students routinely borrow over $110,000 to complete the 27 month Physician Assistant Program.

If you would like to invest in students just like Amie, who are anxious to follow God’s call to the mission field without incurring years of debt that could delay their ability to serve in areas of high need, please consider making a donation to help students like her who are answering God’s calling to medical mission field. The cost of one semester of tuition alone is $11,000.
