A Student Government Learning Experience: My Visit with Tennessee’s Secretary of State

Kenna Tatum headshotThis summer, I had the unique opportunity to attend a luncheon with Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett alongside other student government leaders from across the state. It was an incredible moment of connection and collaboration, and one that reminded me just how powerful student leadership can be.

As I prepare to step into the role of all student body (ASB) president at Trevecca, this experience was the perfect way to kick things off. I was able to meet with leaders from other universities, share ideas and exchange contact information to potentially collaborate on future events. Hearing their stories reminded me that student government is bigger than just one campus—it’s a network of student voices working to make real change.

One major focus of the meeting was voter registration. We learned about the tools and materials Secretary Hargett's office provides to support voter engagement, and the importance of making sure every student knows their voice matters—especially at the ballot box.

We also had conversations about inclusion and visibility on our campuses, and how leadership means creating spaces where every student feels seen and valued.

I’m so excited to begin this journey as ASB president. This role is a chance to serve, listen and grow, and I can’t wait to see what this year holds for our campus and community.
