From the Archives: Trevecca Dining

Over the years, Trevecca students have made many memories at Trevecca’s cafeteria. Since we just celebrated Thanksgiving last week, we remember the significance—both symbolic and literal—of coming to the table with friends and family. As students and faculty share life with one another around the table, friendships are made, and, sometimes, legends are born. Take the Great Tray Caper of 1999, for example, when students from Trevecca and Mount Vernon Nazarene University stole the trays from their respective cafeterias, met halfway, and swapped them.

We all know about the (false) stereotypes associated “Georgia girls” and “Benson boys” at Trevecca, but have you ever wondered why the girl’s dorms at Trevecca are named after states, or how dorm life has changed over the decades? The answer to the first is actually quite simple: Tennessee and Georgia, both constructed in 1966, are named for the Southeast Education Zone that sponsored the buildings. Johnson Hall, however, was named after a special woman named Sadie Agnew Johnson, who was a mathematics professor from 1928-1948.

At Trevecca, names are important. Names—whether the name of a building, a bell tower, or a cafeteria—are reminders of our history. Every day, students take classes in McClurkan, Mackey, and Boone, but do we ever wonder who these buildings are named after? Who were the Waggoners? Who was Tidwell or Moore or Tarter? Why are two of the girl’s dorms named after states? As we witness the development of our new music building with an ever forward-thinking gaze, we want to remember the stories and legacies that made our present possible and our future hopeful.
