At the Mention of Mentoring

I was talking to an investment client of mine recently who works with inmates. I said to him that he has an opportunity to mentor these guys and maybe influence them to do right and never come back to where they are presently living. His response? I just do the right thing, act the right way and expect them to do the same. So I said, "Dude, that’s mentoring."

The fact is, we all mentor in some way or another. When my children were small I mentored them and continue even today. You mentor people of all ages everyday of your life. How do I do that you ask? Here’s how: you do the right thing, act the right way, speak the right way and expect them to do the same. My client was right.

I was privileged to be mentored by wonderful people all my life. In fact, there was a professor at Trevecca that mentored me and to this day I do many things just like he did. You think you don’t have influence on those around you? I challenge you to pay attention this week. Watch and listen to those around you. Hopefully, you’ll hear statements and responses that sound a great deal like your statements and responses.

While you’re mentoring, remember to speak fondly of Trevecca and the place it has in your life. Nudge them to experience Trevecca as well, as a student. We have a wonderful Christian university at Trevecca! Thank you for continuing to support your university.

May all who come behind us find us faithful.
