Trevecca Tips: Our 5 favorite donut shops in Nashville

National-Donut-Day-Blog.png

It’s National Donut Day, and we thought there was no better way to celebrate than highlighting a few of the best donut shops in town—that also happen to be relatively close to campus.

With a little input from our friends at the Tennessean and our own deep knowledge of fried dough and sugar glazes, we offer you our top five suggestions on where to commemorate this special day.

Five Daughters Bakery

Five Daughters Bakery is relatively new to Nashville, but its fame only continues to grow. With three Nashville-area locations, the bakery is most famous for its 100-layer donut. It’s like a croissant crossed with a donut, and you won’t be disappointed. Five Daughters also offers vegan and paleo options. The bakery has a location in 12South, meaning it’s close to campus when you have a craving.

Fox’s Donut Den

A familiar face in the Nashville donut scene, Fox’s Donut Den has been serving up deliciousness for more than 30 years. Want a classic glazed donut? Donut Den is your go-to. They’re also home to one of the best apple fritters in town. Located in Green Hills, it’s a little bit of a drive, but believe us, it’s absolutely worth it!

Utterly Nashville

So this one can be a little confusing. Utterly Nashville serves up donuts and pastries at Crema every Friday through Sunday. It’s a small-batch, artisan bakery that revels in exotic and interesting combinations, such as gingersnap caramel, lemon poppyseed and browned butter lemon thyme donuts as well as seasonal recipes. Plus, Crema is a short drive from campus.

Shipley’s Do-Nuts

While the franchise is based in Houston, Shipley’s is a Nashville stand-by. There are various locations around town, and the chain excels in glazed yeast donuts, filled donuts and yeast donuts with toppings. While it isn’t an artisanal bakery like some of the others on the list, the donuts are delicious—and less expensive—than the artisan options. Shipley’s is like your favorite small-town donut shop, complete with regulars and families who stop in on weekend mornings.

Krispy Kreme

A warm Krispy Kreme donut is a delight few southerners can pass up. Like Shipley’s, Krispy Kreme offers variations on glazed yeast donuts, filled donuts, some pastries and a few cake donuts. The Thompson Lane location is close to campus, plus you can watch the donuts being made. There’s nothing better than a warm donut, so make sure to check if the “HOT” light is on before you order.
