Whenever I feel like I’m getting to a point in my life where I’m feeling complacent, something else comes up to change its course. The fall semester of 2017 had its fair share of opportunities. The Exercise Science and Biology department provided me the opportunity to go on a missions trip to Nicaragua this spring. Technically considered a “FLARE” trip, we’ll be giving seminars and clinics centered around basic health concepts and research pertaining to the local community. We’ll also be working with local health clinics to work alongside existing healthcare that is being provided to the community.

Being a part of the soccer team has also warranted plenty of chances to experience life in different ways. This spring, the men’s soccer team has been running a futsal (indoor soccer) league for refugee boys in the Nashville area. This has been a great experience, not only for the refugee boys, but for my teammates as well. It’s amazing to see the joy that can come from simply coming together around something you love. To think about the idea that we are playing soccer with boys from all across the world, from different backgrounds and experiences, and that we are getting the opportunity to impact their lives, is a true testament to the work of God’s hand in our lives.

My dad always says, “A change in geography means a change in heart." When we can remove ourselves from our current situation and find a new one, we allow ourselves to be vulnerable to change. This “change” can be a trip out of the country, or even something as simple as a shift in your daily routine. The essence of mission work doesn’t depend on the location or destination, but rather the heart. The chance to love one another and further the kingdom stems purely from our own desire to see life of Jesus change those around us. Don’t be discouraged by not going on a missions trip. The work to be done is just as great here in our city, on our campus, amongst our friends, and our families, as it is across the world.

"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." —1 Peter 4:10 NIV
